Airlines

The first stage of being able to fly at all was a marvelous value. Airlines indicated to passengers that they should be very grateful that they were being flown through the air. Qantas hired stewards rather than hostesses, because it felt that classy restaurants had waiters not waitresses. Passengers, in turn, seemed very grateful. Some of that attitude still lingers today.

The stage of competition came rather late to the airline industry because of regulation. In several countries, regulation is still in force and prevents competitive pressures from lowering prices. The reasoning behind this is the need to keep national airlines solvent and operating. Competition, particularly in the United States, lowered prices on busy routes and has led to various incentives like frequent-flyer bonuses. Competition also resulted in the collapse of many airlines, and this consolidation process will doubtless continue.

The stage of integrated values has not yet arrived for airlines. There is nothing that is now being done that I would seriously regard as integrated values. Booking seats on a home computer and being able to telephone from the air are minor matters. The whole business of air travel remains clumsy, cumbersome and highly inconvenient. Perhaps further steps await the technical development of vertical take-off aircraft that can operate from city centers.
